Sonoma Historic Motorsports Festival - Second Year

General Racing, May 14 2013 -Popular Racing Seminar Returns to Sonoma Historic Motorsports Festival for Second Year. Corvette's 60th Anniversary is Celebrated.

Following the success of the inaugural racing seminar held at the 2012 Sonoma Historic Motorsports Festival, a second one will take place on Saturday, May 18, during the 2013 Festival weekend at Sonoma Raceway. This year's Festival celebrates the Corvette's 60th anniversary, and the seminar will include a panel of legendary Corvette racers and others instrumental in the iconic brand's racing victories and rise to popularity through the years.

The panel will include the event's honored guest and California Corvette racer Paul Reinhart; last year's Grand Marshal Bill Pollack, who raced Corvettes in California in the mid- and late '50s; Dick Guldstrand, whose name has been synonymous with Corvettes for the last 40 years; Tony DeLorenzo, whose nearly 50-year racing history includes competing in pro races in an L88 Corvette roadster and the famous Owens-Corning Corvettes; Doug Fehan, Corvette Racing Program Manager for today's hugely-successful Corvette Racing Team; and Rick Voegelin, 
the Corvette Racing Team's former PR manager and historian.

"Last year's seminar was so well-received," said event organizer Steve Earle, president of General Racing, Ltd., who has organized premier historic car events for four decades, "that we knew the fans and the participants would look forward to something even stronger this year. We hope we're able to educate as well as entertain everyone with this elite group of Corvette legends who have been and continue to be part of Corvette's legacy."

Paul Reinhart - Twain Harte CA - Reinhart raced Corvettes in the early days, competing against Carroll Shelby's Cobras with his Sting Ray coupe. He began racing Corvettes in Northern California in the late '50s and in 1962 was crowned Pacific Coast SCCA B Production champion. Reinhart restored and continues to race his Union Oil 76 1957 Corvette in vintage events.

Doug Fehan - Birmingham MiI - Fehan is the Corvette Racing program manager for the American Le Mans Series, with responsibility for overseeing engineering and marketing for Chevrolet's championship-winning Corvette Racing team. Under his leadership, Corvette Racing has become one of the world's premier production sports car teams, winning nine ALMS manufacturers and team championships, eight driver championships, and seven class wins at the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans. As of May 14, 2013, Corvette Racing has won 87 of the 144 races in which the team participated. He is an unabashed advocate for the Corvette cause and an icon for legions of faithful Corvette fans. He received the ALMS "From the Fans" award in 2004, 2008, 2009, and 2010.

Tony DeLorenzo - Bloomfield Hills, MI - DeLorenzo has raced Chevrolets since 1965, including an A Sedan Corvair, an A Production L88 Corvette and a similar car in the '68 Daytona 24-Hour and Sebring 12-Hour races. His teammates included Don Yenko, Peter Revson and Jerry Grant. He won the '68 SCCA Central Division AP championship, and he and teammate Jerry Thompson campaigned the Owens-Corning Corvettes in FIA races. The team had a streak of 22 straight wins in AP and FIA endurance races during the 1969-70 seasons, finishing 1-2 in 14 SCCA National AP races. He continued to race a variety of cars in Trans-Am and IMSA. Since '97 he's raced a Reventlow Scarab, and in 2008 was elected to the Corvette Hall of Fame with Thompson. In 2011 he was inducted into the Bloomington Gold Great Hall along with his 1967 L88 Corvette.

Bill Pollack – Sherman Oaks CA - Pollack began his racing career in the late 1940s and early ‘50s racing an MG, then won the Pebble Beach Road Race twice in an Allard J2, as well as The Guardsman’s Cup Race, the main event of the SCCA-sanctioned 1952 Golden Gate Park Road Races. Competing in over 60 races, he had his first race in a Corvette in 1956 at Bakersfield, Calif., where he finished second followed by Pomona (fifth), Buchanan Field (first), Paramount Ranch (DNF). He's raced a variety of other cars, such as Alfa Romeos, Porsches and Maseratis. In 1958 he concluded his racing career with one event in a Cooper-Climax (entered by Lance Reventlow) then two in a Dean Van Lines sponsored Lister-Chevrolet, finishing eighth at Riverside and Laguna Seca. He is credited with designing the race course at Willow Springs, Calif. and is the author of  “Red Wheels and White Sidewalls: Confessions of an Allard Racer,” originally published in 2004.

Joe Freitas - Los Angeles CA - Freitas was a top Corvette racer in Southern California from 1957 to mid-1965. He raced Corvettes at all the top tracks including Riverside, Laguna Seca, Santa Barbara, Del Mar, Tucson, Pomona, Kent and Willow Springs. During this period he earned 14 podium finishes with seven victories, including a first in class at the USRRC race at Pomona in 1962. He's a good friend of another great Corvette racer, Dave MacDonald.

Dick Guldstrand – Burbank CA - The name Dick Guldstrand has been synonymous with California and Corvettes for more than 40 years. As a California native, he won the Pacific Coast Championship three years straight (1963-65), and the Southern Pacific Championship in 1964, when he was named the regional SCCA Driver of the Year. In 1966 he won the GT class at the 24 Hours of Daytona, and drove the legendary Corvette Grand Sport for Roger Penske at the 1967 12 Hours of Sebring. He also won three SCCA Trans-Am races. In 1968 he opened his own race-car design and fabrication  business specializing in Corvettes and continues today to operate the shop located in the San Fernando Valley of Southern California.

Rick Voegelin, Moderator - Aptos CA -  Voegelin was the trackside PR manager for Corvette Racing in the ALMS Series from 2005-12. He has worked in motorsports for 42 years as a  journalist, editor, and communications professional. He was feature editor and editor-in-chief of Car Craft magazine from 1972-79, and editor of Chevy Thunder magazine in 1986-98. He founded High Performance Communications, a marketing, public relations, and advertising agency specializing in motorsports and automotive accounts. An award-winning author with more than 1,000 published articles and books on racing and high-performance vehicles, he managed media relations programs for Oldsmobile, Chevrolet, and Cadillac in  IMSA and SCCA road racing, NHRA drag racing, and the Indy Racing League before moving to Corvette Racing in 2005.

Fifteen unique race groups will compete on Saturday and Sunday. The Sonoma Historic Motorsports Festival will also feature the popular Wine Country Pavilion, with samples of fine food and wine from the Sonoma and Napa valleys.
