Racing automobiles at the highest levels is achieved with a few basics:

1  Passion - comes from some inner place that spreads to all parts of being and infects family and friends.
2  Skill - needed for ultimate product enjoyment, as this is hands on education, nose to the wheel hard work, and seat of the pants experience in play.
3  Time - see 2. Then it takes time to wait for the few possible historic events available, time to keep the car in fine tune, time to travel to faraway places, time to prepare for the race, and time to wait for the race; finally wait in traffic on the way home.

4  Patience - see 3.
5  Money - time is money (see 3 x $$$).

There are no parts or suppliers for most vintage race cars; you will need a gut check to affirm points 1 to 5. In modern times with multitudes of supercars and purpose built makes one can just skip to #5 and buy your way onto the track (skill be damned). Vintage-historic-fantastic car racing mandates all of the basic requirements plus a minor one to proceed and succeed: to be...

6  Part Crazy

Not crazy over parts, but part crazy in the head (in a good way of course). Old fuddies like me (I assume there are others) have great aversions to putting an old car in positions of potential danger, such as near the grocery store entrance or in a "compact" parkade spot. But race cars always go as fast as they can go - new or old; and braver souls don't seem to mind trying. Taking a beautiful (and probably expensive) old car off the jacks and racing around the track must be terrifying in ways more than speed alone, though. A major crash could cause a lot of damage and possible loss to history, not to mention life and limb. Nobody wants to see a car or human go down.

As much as the point of all this is to whiz by on the track, those moments with the driver are so brief and fleeting for the bystander. Television and telephoto lenses can make quick work of that visual gap, but more realistic option exists - just walk the pits! Here the cars sit 955 of the time; not happy less than 100 miles per hour, but you can see them hear them touch them smell them make love to them. OK, touch them mean with your heart - not your sticky ice cream fingers, and no you should not stand behind inhaling the exhaust fumes like you used to on cold winter days as a kid. The make love part is all imagination.

All of the passion for historic automobile racing should thus not be bottled up inside, but rather dispensed though a wide opening. That said, we might bottle some of it up and share with those that lack the speed demon gene... Next event Aug 17-20 2017.

But there never seems to be enough time
To do the things you want to do
Once you find them
I've looked around enough to know
That you're the one I want to go

1965 Wolverine - In 1965 American race driver Jerry Hansen asked GM race car designer Lee Dykstra and coach-builder George Anderson to create a Can-Am race car. The idea was to build 3 cars, but just one was finished. Sep 11 1966 the Wolverine was raced for the first time at the Can-Am event at Circuit Mont-Tremblant. Up to 1972 the car participated in many SCCA raced as well in Road America 500 miles driven and owned by different drivers. The first and only Wolverine was painted in Jerry Hansen race-colour-Maroon. The Wolverine today, still powered by Chevrolet. (currently for sale)
