Retracing History at Art Center Car Classic 2013

Pasadena CA, Oct 27 2013 - Some people have all the luck. We’re all lucky to have the Art Center put on the Car Classic every year. Some folks make their own luck. Peter Mullins of automotive museum fame is one of those folks. He recently donated $15 million dollars to the Art Center and has long been a benefactor. He also brought a passion project home for the Art Center to grow up around.

Peter’s mission was to design a period correct body to fit the last 1939 Bugatti Type 64 Coupe frame built before the coach builder’s death. A body had never been set on the frame; what would it take to complete the job 80 years on?

Dave Kunz surmised “it obviously it has to be someone who has the passion and funding to be able to do this, knowing the right people and skilled design people like yourself and the team.” Peter was that someone. He also knew Stewart Reed and the College of Design team could fill in the blanks.

Stewart offered that the end game is to land as a display in the Mullins Automotive Museum in Oxnard CA. The body easily separates from the artful frame – four bolts and four men to lift off. “We’ll suspend the body over the frame and present as a coach build project that’s nearing completion.”

So everyone got lucky with public art, whether they had to make it or not.
