Irwindale CA - After two very spirited Loan Mart Trophy Dashes, the Superior Automotive Engineering Super Stocks rolled out onto the Irwindale half-mile with a nice 16-car field that saw Rich DeLong III from Santa Clarita lead the opening laps with Greg Crutcher making his way to the front followed by Long Beach's Zack Green.

A spin on lap 23 by Gary Frankovich (Barstow) brought out the yellow and a double row restart ... which became a red flag when Chatsworth's Eric Sunness and DeLong tangled on the front straight and clobbered the turn one attenuator on the third mile.  The good news was that they both walked away from the nasty-looking double crunch with Sunnis' car very bent and out for the night.

On the restart Craig Rayburn (Simi Valley) rocketed into lead but was soon overtaken by a storming Greg Crutcher (Covina) who quickly took  back command and went on for the win with Rayburn coming in second followed by Riverbank's Aaron Coonfield.  Points leader Gary Reed finished fifth setting up an authentic nail-biter for the final Super Stock race on November 2nd.  We'll go into that one with only 2 razor-thin points separating Reed a hard-charging and Zack Green (278 to 276) and both Crutcher and Palm Desert's Robert Dezarov  both ready to pounce at 266 and 254 points respectively.  The race win pays 50 point and a DNF pays precisely zilch ... there will be a bunch of permutations and predictions when these machines are back on in November.

In the Pick Your Part Southwest Tour Trucks the whole show was young Zack Green and veteran Neil Conrad (Arcadia) nose to tail on a spewctacular breakaway that saw the pair already lapping back markers by lap 10 of the 40 lap show.  On the last lap Conrad went full tilt boogie and beat Green (who had just finished a strong forth in the Super Stock race) to the line by a skinny 0.873 seconds.

No one in the stands saw anything else except the two leaders in this one.  In the press box after the race Conrad told reporters that "... Zack Green is one driver to watch."  By way of personal background, Conrad also explained to reporters that he's not really a "retired firefighter" (well ... he did retire as a Captain after 29 years with the Arcadia FD) but he's just as busy as ever now as a volunteer Battalion Chief at the Sierra Madre Fire Department.

(Conrad also corrected a misstatement made in the Speedway's pre-race release regarding PYPSWTT's:  this race was NOT their last at Irwindale this season; happily they'll be back on November 2 for their final race here).

After  having his #17 race car neatly folded in half last week, Covina's Mike Johnson was back with a completely rebuilt car and a mission in the Lucas Oil Super Late Models leading the roaring pack from the green until lap 17 when Ryan Partridge (Rancho Cucamonga) seemingly came out of nowhere to flash by low and into the  lead never to be headed again.  Highland's Toni McCray tagged along with him for a while but, by lap 25 Partridge had a 15 car length lead with McCray and Johnson holding station about 2 seconds back and rookie points leader Andrew Porter (La Verne) about a second and change behind them in fourth.  That's the way it ended setting up one final race for the Lucas Late Model title on October 5 with only 36 points separating the season-long sparring partners Partridge and McCray  (390-354).

Oak Hills own Kenny Smith won the night's Open Comp race which featured a nice range of racing machines (trucks, Figure 8 cars, modifieds, and others) all going for the win on the track's inner third mile.

In the big guns, the NASCAR Super Late Models, San Fernando's Rip Michels again put on a driving display dicing with early leader Juan Garcia from Bogota, Colombia. The first few laps saw Garcia blasting laps in the lead but then, somewhere around lap, 15 Michels seemed to catch another gear and simply began pulling away with his regular SLM dancing partner Toni McCray coming right along with him.  At halfway David Ross from Colton decided that he wanted to play and made an intense run on McCray trying to get by her high, low and everywhere in between but to no avail.  For the last 8 laps of this one Michels (who, with the track record of 65 main event wins to his credit, was the cover subject of the night's racing program) deftly lead a master class in short track stock car driving for anyone who cared to watch.
