Packed with important car people and iconic cars, the cake and icing was the Batmobile and George Barris celebrating his 88th birthday. It was pure LA, including a varietal lineup of food trucks to choose from for breakfast. Even better to have live music – thanks to the Franklin Vanderbilt Band (www.franklinvanderbilt.com).

LaBestioni LaAutoshow Video

A gauntlet of classic cars lined the front entrance of Los Angeles Convention Center. The Petersen Automotive Museum showed their 1953 Cadillac Ghia and 1953 Dodge Storm Z-250 by Bertone. Gary Wales took up 4 stalls with his 2 LaBestionis.

1949 Mercury Customized Hells Chariot from “Grease”

Right out of Mann’s Chinese Theater in 1978, the customized 1949 Mercury (1950 front-end!) “Hells Chariot” from the movie “Grease”. Eddie Paul built this car that raced in the movie, now owned by David Desure and Scott Byrum. It is the only car from the movie known to survive.

1956 Mercedes-Benz 300 Sc Coupe

David Gooding (Gooding & Company Auctions) was on hand and hands on the 1956 Mercedes-Benz 300 SC Coupe & 1956 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing - coming up for sale in Scottsdale.

1954 Plymouth Belmont Concept Car

Craig Jackson summed up Barrett-Jackson Auctions involvement: “We're here to showcase our cars. This is mecca; where the car people come to - Southern California. We brought some of our salon cars; the (1954) Plymouth Belmont.

This morning we were at the Motor Press Guild - had Don “the Snake” Prudhomme up there with one of his iconic Hot Wheels Funny Cars and Haulers.

We also have a beautiful Alfa Romeo here (1939  - 6C 2500) and another George Barris car the “Asteroid”. We'll be selling in January.” (Jan 12-19 Scottsdale Auctions)

So the LA Auto Show begins. There are so many dozens of concepts and new products (22 world debuts) and sideshows it is a challenge to cover the surface, let alone dig into the gold mine.

Mercedes-Benz AMG Vision Gran Turismo (2013)

Our Best of Show goes to the Mercedes AMG Vision Gran Turismo concept car. The 2014 Corvette looked very nice in dark metallic green – Chevrolet can debut this car as many times as they want to. We could watch the Lexus LF-LC Hybrid Sport Coupe concept spinning around all day. Cadillac ranged from the electrified 2014 ELR to the Elmiraj Concept. This is a world competition in which we all win.

The Aftermarket Showcase would be a car show all on its own any other week. Galpin Auto Sports came out with all the horses, ponies and animals over a huge spread. The show itself seemed more interesting this year and surely hit a wider audience with the local activities.
