Monterey CA, Aug 16-22 2016 - Monterey Car Week seems to roll down a wider road every year. More and more automakers, organizers and product suppliers are getting in on the action - making for a harder choice on where to go and what to do. You have to find and follow your tribe - and if you are into perfected automobiles you will find more of your tribe here than anywhere.

Concorso Italiano 2016

With certain key events focused on country of origin (Concorso Italiano, Legends of the Autobahn) and many maker brand parties and driving tours cater to the diehard followers and wish-believers.

In parts everywhere else than here this week, it would be a spectacle to see a Shelby Cobra (real or recreated) roaring down the street. During MCW you can find your choice of any color at one of the many auctions - Mecum; RM Sotheby’s; Russo & Steele; Rick Cole, Bonhams etc. If you didn't strike it rich by now (there's still time) you can set on a corner downtown and wait a few minutes. Car birds of a feather flock together - and micro gatherings of limited run cars find their brethren. If a guy or gal has a rare car just like yours, that's large basis for common interests to start friendships with.

Given all the long haul driving necessary to get across the valleys and passes, it's not hard to get caught up in the ultimate version of wagon trains crossing the geography.

In 2016, that means you can get stuck in traffic with long strings of Porsches, McLarens, Lamborghinis, Cobras and other dreamboats. It's rather unfortunate that most of the peninsula roads wind along with just two lanes, though. While this is not likely a problem the other 51 weeks in a year, on this high octane and testosterone bleeding week there is limited room for letting off such steam.

The Monterey Long Line of Cars of the Year award however goes to a row of cars that weren't allowed to move for 24 hours. The featured marque at Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance is given a prominent perch just inside the entrance ropes alongside the beach cliff to the right. Past events have featured Maserati Centennial , 1914 French Grand Prix, Simplex Automobiles and The Ruxton Reunion gathered last year (possibly the most ever at one time in the brand's history). 2016 marque was the venerable Ford GT - a fantastic lineup of ALL of the Le Mans' winning cars from the sixties.

Getting this premium lineup ready the night before is a heavily choreographed activity that makes sure that all cars show up on time for the dance and assume their position in the cast. Obviously great care is needed getting things synched up within inches of the prepainted markers on the lawn. With high idling fire breathing monsters in the trunk, an accidental dumped clutch could leave the largest ever twin divots on the 18 fairway.

With the feature cars quickly covered up and night falling, it's not long now before the rest of the choreography happens for hundreds more old dancers. You can hardly believe how much changes on this field from sundown to sunrise en Concours...
